2020 Update

3 min read

Hello, Sorry I have been so absent lately. If you've followed me on Patreon you know we had an unprecedented busy time at my day job that took a lot of momentum out of me. Another factor is that my iPad, which I use to do pretty much all of my drawing, had been acting a little squirrely. My Clip Studio app would shut down unexpectedly, and anything I'd done since the last save would be lost. The battery was also not what it had been, and I was running low on memory which probably wasn't helping.

Work has let up, and the iPad was replaced just this week (with 4 times the storage!) but there's more to my issue than just those practical factors. The world as it has been this last year is in a pretty dark place, most folks would agree, and in the United States the rest of the year looks particularly bleak as we're entering an election that is sure to be contested by whoever appears to be the loser. The backdrop of the pandemic (the reality of which is apparently still up for the debate in my country), civil strife, and natural disasters--and just how MEAN everyone seems to be these days--is not helping. I suffer from anxiety and depression and I am not in a good place right now. So I am taking the following action, suggested actually by a client, and have cancelled commissions for the rest of the year. In February I will see where I am at and go from there. Hopefully the situation will have improved, or if it hasn't, at least I might have had the time to learn to accept things the way they are. If I decide to return to commissions the clients already in the queue will have first option. In the meantime I will focus on my own projects and try to get some spark back. But I have to do what is best for me right now, or run the risk of burning out and stepping away from this permanently. Thank you for your understanding.

On the plus side, I will be posting a sequence I did last year for Halloween at my Patreon, so for those of you who haven't joined there, there's new content on the way.

Take care and be safe, everyone.

Checking in since I've been quiet on all my platforms, for which I apologize.

I have a natural tendency to soak up negative emotion and feed off of it. If you've been online or watching the news at all, you know there's been an overabundance of it. I let myself get swept up in a depression spiral that disrupted my work. The fact that I'm not even part of the population that is suffering--and has been all along--just made me feel guilty and fed my depression even further, which of course helps no one.

My wife, God bless her, intervened and took me out to a day in the park. The weather here was gorgeous, and just being with her under a big blue sky broke the cycle. I still needed to do something to process my thoughts and feelings about the latest wave of killings and protests, so I put everything else aside and drew a series of images which you can see here, along with my feelings about the reckoning our country seems to finally be facing:

The basic message is that people that have it way worse than I do--than many do--get back up and get back to work every day, and that's something the rest of us can learn from. And just so we're clear, Black Lives do Matter, and I'm trying to make changes in my own life to make those more than just words. Again, more on that in the Patreon article.

Still with me? Good.

Yesterday I finally got going on my commission list, and updates on those will resume. Also started updating Patreon again. I have started going back into work most days rather than working from home so drawing time is a little tighter, but I will try to adjust some other activities accordingly so I can get moving on these projects.

In what to me was a surprise move, the school I work at is keeping its campuses closed to the public with a few exceptions through the rest of 2020. I am not entirely sure what that means for our department, but I suspect after the August-September start of school, telecommuting will be more common again. So perhaps my schedule will lighten up again in a few months. We will see.

One final request--I always encourage everyone to share their feedback. If you've been following me I assume that the general kind of content I post--mostly superhero concepts, fan art, and transformations--is of interest to you. But if there's anything specific about a piece I post that makes you feel unwelcome or keeps you from enjoying content you'd otherwise be interested in, be sure to let me know.

Thank you. Be safe, and take care of yourselves and each other.

Hello, everyone.

Apologies for not updating sooner. I know most if not all of us are facing some crazy times, and I am currently transitioning to working from home for my day job. At least it's an excuse to clean up my studio, which must now also be my office.

That said, the commission show does go on. I've complete my latest round, and the posts for the next round are taken. Since I won't be commuting, and my day job work will often not fill my entire day, I'm hoping to really get some momentum going for the next two weeks at least. So below is my menu again--the top row options are still available:
